Kalopsia Exhibition
The exhibition explores the complex relationship between the physical body and the inner self, asking how the two come together to shape personal identity and individuality. Through the human figure, the artist examines the ways in which the mind and body interact, sometimes complementing one another and at other times existing in tension.
This dialogue is reflected in the contrasting materials and techniques used throughout the works. Charcoal figures represent the physical body, with its strength, vulnerability, and inherent limitations, while woodcut imagery layered onto the figures evokes the inner self—a seemingly boundless space where memories, experiences, emotions, and personal histories are preserved. The altered or overlaid faces, often resembling masks, further blur the distinction between reality and the ideal, suggesting that identity is never entirely fixed or transparent.
The artist’s visual language is also deeply informed by ancient Greek art and its enduring pursuit of harmony and perfection between body and mind. Yet rather than simply embracing this ideal, the exhibition questions it. The works place the perfection of the classical ideal alongside the imperfections of the human experience, suggesting that what makes us human is not our ability to achieve perfection, but the marks left by everything we have lived through.
At its heart, the exhibition is therefore a reflection on individuality and self-acceptance. As people grow, change, and accumulate experiences, their imperfections become part of their personal history. The artist invites the viewer to see these imperfections not as flaws to be concealed, but as authentic traces of existence—elements that shape personality, distinguish one individual from another, and ultimately make each person unique.
